IDENTIFY THE ANT SPECIES ON YOUR PROPERTY

Identifying the species of ants infesting your property is imperative to devise the right ant-control plan. Look out for the following:

  Carpenter ant
Carpenter ants are indigenous to many forested areas of southern Ontario. With new homes and subdivisions being built all over the region, these ants are finding their ways into homes more and more. They prefer to build nests in rotting wood or even just damp wood. They can be up to 2.5cm long, and they are bright black in colour, almost look shiny like leather. They can enter through any hole, crack, or gap around a door or window.

  Pavement ant
Pavement ants are one type of ant to find in the house in the early spring to mid-summer time. These ants prefer to build their nests under cement, patio stones and blocks, pavement, and concrete walls. On very rare occasions, they can bite when being disturbed; however, they are ultimately harmless to humans.

  Pharaoh ant
Pharaoh ants are a very small yellowish-brown ant. Sometimes they can even look transparent, which makes them difficult to see on light colour surfaces. Typically they are found on kitchen counters around sugary foods. They are most common around the middle of summer during intense heat and can be a major indoor nuisance if left unchecked. They are typically .2cm in length.

WHAT DAMAGE DO THEY CAUSE?

When ants get into your property, they can cause many problems, some of which are:

Nuisance: All ants can become a nuisance when they get into your trash cans, garages and common areas of homes. They can crawl on your counters and food, leading to possible contamination. When they get inside, they can make you feel overwhelmed due to their sheer numbers.

Food contamination: Ants can pose major health risks by contaminating the food in your home. As they move about your home, they pick up and carry bacteria that are passed on to your food and kitchen utensils. Ants can contract and contaminate your food with E. coli, Shigella, Salmonella, Staphylococcus, Clostridium and Streptococcus.

Property damage: Carpenter ants can establish their nests inside wood by tunnelling into it and establishing their colonies inside. If these ants find wood in your home suitable for their needs, they won't hesitate to take advantage of it. They are drawn to cool, moist areas inside homes such as in your bathrooms, under kitchen sinks, in crawl spaces and other damp areas. If your home has any moisture issues or damage caused by water, these ants will target decaying wood first.

Bites and stings: Ant bites or stings can also pose a health risk. Any ant can bite you by using its jaws to pinch your skin. The danger associated with ant bites is the risk of infection. If not cleaned and cared for, you are at risk of secondary bacterial infection, which will leave the bite inflamed. If your ant bite becomes infected, it can also turn into a pustule that could leave a scar.

When an ant stings, it will inject venom into your skin, which causes localized pain. Ant sting can even be life-threatening for those who are allergic. If you have suffered an ant sting, you will experience pain, swelling, redness and itchiness. Some people can also experience more severe symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, stomach cramps, dizziness, hoarseness, chest pain and difficulty breathing or swallowing.

Allergic reaction: Usually include swelling of the throat and tongue, hives, stomach cramps, nausea, tightness in the chest, trouble breathing and dizziness. At the most severe, anaphylaxis can take place, which will cause a serious whole-body reaction. This can start to happen within minutes of being bitten and includes a drop in blood pressure, dizziness, unconsciousness or cardiac arrest. If you experience some of these symptoms after an ant sting, it is recommended that you seek medical attention.

OUR SOLUTION

We believe that knowing which species of ants you’re dealing with is essential to eliminate them successfully. Most ant infestations are caused by odorous house ants. Finding their nests and exterminating them is a tough, time-consuming job – one that we’re happy to do.

When we’re dealing with odorous house ants and pavement ants, we treat the exterior perimeter first, which prevents ants from entering and exiting your house. Next, we shift our focus to eliminate anthills and nests in garden beds, lawns and the surrounding areas. These steps reduce the need to use chemicals on the interiors as well as provide long-term results. Commercial gel baits are used for the interiors.

Carpenter ants are also treated with a similar approach. However, as most carpenter ants build colonies far inside the walls, you will require the help of our professional ant removal expert to exterminate them.

POST TREATMENT

Do not enter your property for at least 6 hours and ensure to keep windows open for at least 20 to 30 minutes if possible.
